A review from 2010:
Newsletter 013 - 29 December 2010
Tuesday I was watching the morning news,
and a debate about healthcare was on. One of the spokesmen for the Healthcare bill said that we do not want, “to end up like Terri Schiavo.” Well, that brought up a lot of memories from my mother and my husband’s ex-wife, Jane. Both were sick with Neurological diseases. One with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), and the other an unknown condition. Our families went through hard times but we never lost hope. We had excellent care and gave each one an improved quality of life.
My mother did not want to be on life support so our lawyer wrote up her last wishes. She still lived for five more years.
Jane, my husband’s former wife, lived for 12 additional years. The doctors did not give a name to her disease, so no one knew what the outcome would be. She got worse over the years. Each of these women was given a chance to live and died when God decided.
Do we want the government telling us when we should die? This is the road we are going down. I will not go over what these Progressives want, for if you watched the public debate, you understand. They do not respect life.
Each of us has some similar experience with the uncertainty of life and death, and that is as it should be. Government intervention to "regulate" and regiment the conduct of the end of your life, motivated by the "collective good," is a perversion of the natural order and should be repudiated. It may be more efficient for the regulators, but it is despotism disguised as healthcare.
This is what the government "regulators" are doing (among other things) while we are enjoying the Holidays. The regulations from EPA have also begun, so we are in for a fight after the 1st of the New Year. See the articles and posts listed below to get some idea of what our discussions will be when we next meet.
Our next meeting will be January 14, 2011. Please get involved, for this is the only chance we have to prevent what is coming.
End of Life Counseling...REMEMBER NUDGE? HHS and Dr. Berwick has nudged a resolution to provide payment for Doctors that provide end of life counseling for patients, "every year".
Resolution written in the Christmas holiday. Sound familiar? How do we fight? THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HOLDS THE KEY. They have the ability to hold oversight hearings on these resolutions and say yea or nay. Right now, the White House is hiring a team of attorneys to fight these objections. But the House can say, NO!
In a stealthy move, the Obama administration has slipped end-of-life planning, famously criticized as “death panels,” back into the law by means of a new Medicare regulation. The action was exposed, equally stealthily, by The New York Times on Christmas Day when few would be reading the paper. The rule was issued by Dr. Donald M. Berwick, administrator of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and an advocate of cost-cutting and rationing of health care. The rule takes effect Jan. 1.
OBAMA RETURNS TO END-OF-LIFE PLAN THAT CAUSED STIR IN 2009.

WASHINGTON — When a proposal to encourage end-of-life planning touched off a political storm over “death panels,” Democrats dropped it from legislation to overhaul the health care system. But the Obama administration will achieve the same goal by regulation, starting Jan. 1.
Under the new policy, outlined in a Medicare regulation, the government will pay doctors who advise patients on options for end-of-life care, which may include advance directives to forgo aggressive life-sustaining treatment.
