The SoCal High School Cycling League is entering its fourth season. As such, we are already down the path of establishing our place in the history of cycling. Spring 2012 will be the 4th season that SoCal League student-athletes have competed in school or club colors in the great sport of cross-country mountain biking. Though some clubs will be new this year, there are some clubs where student-athletes will have completed their whole high school cycle (grades 9-12) as mountain bike racers, there are some clubs where original coaches have already done their service and turned over teams to new coaches, and there are some composite clubs that have now gone away and been replaced by single-school clubs.

In order to get ahead of the curve of history, we want to begin preserving some of the artifacts of the League. Some of the most recognizable and time honored artifacts are cycling jerseys. They speak to the styles, the materials, the sponsors, and the clubs that existed in a given window and encapsulate the sport very well.

I have had the privilege of being a member of the Pasadena Athletic Association (PAA) cycling club since 2003. A few years ago I had some available time and, as the club was approaching its 50th year anniversary, I started networking and putting together a loose historical blog going back to 1961. Needless to say; times, equipment, and styles change! It is interesting to look back at the year to year history of the organization through the iconic cycling jersey. Take a look when you get a chance.

So in order to begin preserving the history of our League, I would ask you to help me by sending me photos (similar to the photo next to this section) which show the front and back of the jersey (if you have two jerseys you can take the photo at one time). Also include in the email the race season (the upcoming spring would be the 2012 season) and the club name. Once I receive enough photos I will put together a page on the website that shows the year-by-year color of our League. Photos can be sent to

Looking forward to the great season ahead!

For the first time ever, NICA will be hosting a webinar to cover the rules for the upcoming racing year. With 7 NICA leagues on the ground in 2012 (NorCal, SoCal, Colorado, Washington, Texas, Minnesota, and Utah) the need for good communication is paramount! If you're a SoCal League coach and you have the time, please try to attend this free webinar.

The date and time are Thursday December 15th at 5:30 PM PST. Please register HERE to attend.

The SoCal League is pleased to host 3 rider camps this pre-season. Two day camps and one two day camp.

The day camps are open to all League riders as well as middle school riders with some riding experience. They are geared toward beginner and intermediate riders interested in learning or refreshing basic skills, meeting new League friends, and going for a good group ride with riders of similar skill and fitness level. Day camps are being offered at the Stumpgrinder Dirt Club in Los Olivos (the State Championships venue) on Sunday January 22nd and at Bonelli Park in San Dimas on Sunday January 29th.

The two day camp is being billed as an intensive skills camp. We are bringing NICA skills guru Lee McCormack for this camp. Minimum requirement for this camp is one year racing experience in any NICA league. For those who have taken a Lee McCormack clinic, you know there are few people who can break down riding dynamics as well as Lee. For those experienced riders wishing to enhance their skills this is a rare opportunity.

Registration is open and riders can sign up HERE.

We will be looking for League coaches to help us at camps as skill instructors and ride leaders. Please email Matt Gunnell at if you want to work a camp. Hours toward coach licensing are available. Partial scholarships are available for campers needing assistance.

Coach Jay Bunch of Murrieta Valley HS and Coach Kevin Turner of Hemet HS do a "talk back" scenario at Wilderness First Aid class.

This past weekend 28 coaches, 1 volunteer, and 3 student-athletes were certified in Wilderness First Aid and 14 coaches, 1 volunteer, and 3 student-athletes were certified in CPR. Thank you so much to the Crescenta Valley HS club for hosting, to Bob Foster for instructing, and to YOU for committing to helping us build the best program we possibly can!

Look for the next SoCal League WFA-MTB class to take place sometime between December 2012 and January 2013.

The SoCal League has a coach and staff only facebook group. Since it launched near the start of the 2011 season, coaches have been sharing ideas and information and the League has used the group to put timely information out to coaches. If you facebook, the group can be found HERE. Please feel free to use this group as a touchstone to share coaching ideas, coaching questions, and equipment and clothing exchanges.
