The United States sports industry generates $414 billion annually. The amount of energy being consumed is not often thought of by fans when heading to the stadium or ball park. These stadiums, parks and arenas use large quantities of energy to provide the forum for entertainment and experience millions of people enjoy each week. This is true around the world, and across all sports. The environmental challenges that exist are being dealt with across the world, and being lead by sports leagues in North America.
The recently formed Green Sports Alliance (GSA) is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce the environmental impact of professional sports and to inspire fans to join up in these efforts. The founding members are; the MLB’s Seattle Mariners, the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, NHL’s Vancouver Canucks, the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and MLS’s Seattle Sounders FC, giving the organization representatives from six major sports leagues.
The founding partners of the Alliance are the Natural Resources Defense Council, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Portland State Institute for Sustainable Solutions, Green Building Services, Coates Kokes, Green Bear Group, Lane Powell and Milepost Consulting. Backers hope to expand the alliance across North America.
Over the past year, venue operators, sports marketing directors and environmental scientists have collaborated to exchange their real world experiences and create metrics that are meaningful and measurable. The information gathered from this collaboration is now available to members and partners not only to gain a better understanding of the impact sporting events have on the environment, but also to provide inspiration and a roadmap for teams and venues to make changes to reduce that impact.
Bud Selig, commissioner of Major League Baseball (MLB), said: “Major League Baseball applauds the leadership shown by the Seattle Mariners’ environmental efforts… We support all the members of the professional sports community working to advance this important cause and wish the Green Sports Alliance the best of success.”
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said: “The NFL is proud to support the greening efforts of the Seattle Seahawks… Enhancing the sustainability of professional sports is a worthy goal, and we wish the Green Sports Alliance great success.”
Other teams and venues that have introduced environmental practices include the New York Jets and Giants, the Staples Center, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Phoenix Suns, and England’s Manchester United FC.
Last April Major League Baseball announced it had adopted a program under which all 30 clubs will begin collecting and analyzing stadium operations data.
Eighty percent of North American professional sports teams plan to increase their environmental sustainability programs, according to a survey of more than 50 pro teams by ProGreenSports.
The Green Sports Alliance Summit is a three day executive summit, hosted by the Green Sports Alliance and is designed for leaders from the sports community. The event will use a mix of stories, case studies, lectures, panels, breakout groups, and site visits to introduce the participants to a range of thinking and best practices around sustainability that produce bottom line benefits while demonstrating responsible corporate and community citizenship.
The quest for sustainability in our commerce and communities is no longer a fad, but an imperative. There is mounting evidence to demonstrate that environmental stewardship is smart business and that it has a strong and growing following. Teams and venues are saving money, improving their environmental performance and gaining new sponsors and community partners.

Campbell Soup Earns LEED Silver in Camden for Employee Center Building
The Campbell Soup Company has been headquartered in Camden, New Jersey since 1869 and is in the midst of a $72 million upgrade to its corporate campus. The project is part of an overall, and ongoing, effort to redevelop Camden’s Gateway District. As part of that upgrade, Campbell opened a new 100,000-square-foot, employee services building designed by Philadelphia-based KlingStubbins last July. Today, Campbell announced that the building has earned LEED Silver certification from USGBC.
A glass curtain wall allows natural light to flood the building’s lobby, as well as employee spaces on both the first and second floors. The remainder of the building is clad in brick with colored glass interspersed throughout. The building is also connected to others in the campus, which allowed KlingStubbins to also include a landscaped courtyard as part of its design program.
Green features include:
A reflective roof and efficient, pollution reducing outdoor lighting;
Design features that should reduce the building’s water usage by 45 percent;
Carpeting, countertops, most furniture and other features made from recycled materials;
30 percent of the building’s construction materials were made from recycled content, 25 percent traveled no more than 500 miles and 99 percent of the construction waste was sent to construction recyclers instead of landfills;
An air-quality monitoring system ensures enough outdoor air replenishes the indoor air: and
Campbell offers only reusable containers and china in its café to eliminate waste from disposable plates and utensils.
The project team also included Red Bank, New Jersey-based general contractor Torcon.

Green Power Community Challenge Rankings - Over the span of a year, EPA GPCs will track and report their collective green power use and green power percentage of total electricity use. GPCs will be ranked according to the two award categories on EPA’s website on a quarterly schedule. Local Law 84
All buildings in New York City over 50,000 square feet are required to submit an annual energy benchmark. We're here to help make it as easy as possible for you to meet this requirement, while putting a valuable financial evaluation tool in your hands.
Building owners and operators are growing more concerned with the upcoming deadline to have their properties properly benchmarked. Professionals in the industry are reporting a sharp increase in the RFQ's for building benchmarking. What surprises most industry professionals is how easily and quickly these buildings can be benchmarked - assuming of course you hire the correct professionals.
Benchmarking is easy-to-do, inexpensive, and accessible. In addition to supporting the requirement, we can provide intuitive monthly reports on your energy usage and spotlight opportunities for energy savings. The first benchmark report is due to the city on May 1, 2011 (grace period instituted, please see below), but there are benefits to starting as soon as possible so that you can take control of your energy usage sooner.
The grace period for penalties only applies for May 1 to August 1, 2011 while owners get used to the new requirements; (however, the city doesn't expect extensions in future years). Russell Unger, Executive Director of the Urban Green Council, sees the extension as a smart move. While some owners have already been benchmarking, for the vast majority, especially residential coops, this is totally new. Given that 16,000 buildings are impacted by the law, and the fact that the final rules were only issued last month, an grace period for the fines will make the transition to the reporting less painful.
