It seems I am destined to be forever late with these newsletters! Summer flew by so fast that I missed that update altogether, and for the last couple of months I have been nursing my aging laptop back to health. Today is the first day we've been back on the job together, and so, with fingers crossed we bring you the Autumn update!
Wabi Brook Studio is growing in leaps and bounds, making the last few months the busiest in many years. I found myself overwhelmed trying to keep up with the myriad of little things that needed attention seemingly every minute of everyday. In an effort to overcome my workaholic tendancies and regain some balance in my life, I first went on a week-long vacation - the first in more years than I can remember, then I made a conscious effort to experience life more deliberately. What sanity and health-savers they turned out to be! What do you do to keep yourself grounded when you are flying madly off in all directions?
Bowls! My annual trek to Haliburton School of the Arts (this year I took stone setting and silver smithing) resulted in a passion for creating functional pieces of art. The new tools and equipment I need arrived a short time ago, so I am now making copper bowls. It is so satisfying to raise one up from a flat sheet of metal with just my hammers and torch! So far these are only for sale at the Riverside Farmers' Market.
Also, by popular request, I have small framed prints available. These professionally printed and framed reproductions make collecting or giving my art work more affordable. Perfect for decorating the spare room, or office! Again, these are only available at the Farmers Market for the time being.
Note cards are back, too - at the Market, and soon to be on my website!
I am happy to announce that Pretty Chic Boutique is now carrying my jewellery! This gorgeous shop in Guelph, ON, exclusively carries work by Canadian jewellery designers. I am very proud to have my work included! Drop in the next time you are in Guelph, and tell Corin that Julie sent you!
You can also find my jewellery at these shops:
Eclectic Cottage, Sundridge, ON (just south of Sundridge off Hwy. 11) 705 384-1478
The Gallery Boutique, Sudbury, ON
Soul Sister Creations, North Bay, ON
The Artist's Gallery, Lakeshore Drive, New Liskeard, ON (for the month of December)
Thanks to everyone who recommended shops to me! I am working on developing relationships with a few others, and will have more to add to this list in the new year. I am always open to finding new places to sell my work, so if you know of a shop or gallery which you think would be a good fit for my work, just contact me.

The regular Farmers' Market season is drawing to a close - this Saturday, October 29 is the last one for the year. And what a season it was! More vendors, more people supporting the local producers and artisans. It all led to my most successful season ever. I can't thank enough all the people who supported me by purchasing my art or jewellery, bringing friends and family to my booth, or by stopping by to tell me just how much you love my products. I appreciate each and every one of you!
If you can't make it to Market on Saturday to get a jump on your Holiday shopping, you will have one more chance. The Christmas Market is coming up at the end of November.
Save these dates:
Friday, November 25 - 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday, November 26 - 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Riverside Place, Whitewood Avenue, New Liskeard
I will be there with a great selection of sustainably created gift ideas to suit all budgets. Original art, reproductions, metal work, jewellery and cute little reindeer - something for everyone!
Are you interested in learning basic wire working and metal smithing skills? I am working with Northern College to develop an introductory Jewellery Making Course. The final details have yet to be worked out, but tentatively it will run for 6 weeks, one evening a week, starting sometime in the new year. Want to join in the fun? Just contact me or Northern College, Haileybury Campus and ask to be put on the mailing list. We will send you all the information, dates, costs as soon as they are finalized.
Drawing eyes well is something with which I've noticed my students (and myself) struggle. It is difficult to remember to draw what you see, and not what what you think you know. There are many books and tutorials on the subject, but I thought I would share this excellent video clip by artist David Kassan with you. It really demonstrates well the "draw what you see" idea.
November is "Art Every Day" Month. What a great way to kick start your creative habit! I have been neglecting my drawing, so I'm digging out a tiny sketch book and joining in. What about you? What can you do every day to add more creativity to your life? Sing, paint, dance, cook - anything goes even if it is only for two minutes everyday. Just do it!
Thank you for helping to keep the Earth whole,
