On Sunday 11 September, I flew to Queenstown, New Zealand to attend the annual De Lorenzo ASPYA hairdressing conference. The ASPYA program is an extraordinary industry resource, providing education and training in a wide range of areas as well as marketing expertise and support to its members in both Australia and New Zealand, and Bella has been a loyal member of the ASPYA program since 2004 and a strong supporter of De Lorenzo’s products and philosophies.

The aim of the 3-day conference, which is held in a different location each year, is to showcase what’s new at De Lorenzo and to provide a networking opportunity for industry professionals. There were a number of fantastic guest speakers, including Nick Bowdich, a social networking expert, Robyn Moore who is the voice of Blinky Bill and Peter Hughes, a motivational speaker and Bali bombing survivor.

For me, the highlight of the conference was at the Gala Dinner, when De Lorenzo directors Chris and Anthony De Lorenzo announced that Bella had won the prestigious ASPYA Salon of the Year Award for Australia and New Zealand! Salons from all over Australia and New Zealand compete for this coveted industry award, so it’s a great honour to be chosen as the winner.

The judges were impressed by our extensive, in-house, staff training program, the number of regional awards the salon and individual staff members had won, and, in particular, our creative approach to marketing. They also commented on what they called our ‘philanthropic approach to business’, the fact that we like to fundraise to support charitable causes and to give back to the local community.

But, of course, none of this would be possible without the consistent professionalism and dedication demonstrated by every member of the Bella Team. Together we transform the necessity of having a haircut into a luxurious experience for our clients, whose loyalty and support we greatly appreciate.

I commenced my apprenticeship at Bella the Cut & Colour Salon in December 2008 with excitement and confidence that I would learn from the best. In the past three years I have experienced many
great challenges whilst learning and having fun. Through the thorough training and support I
received from my fellow Team members, I was able to advance in my apprenticeship confidently
and expand my knowledge in hairdressing. I am grateful for the ongoing education, as this inspires
me everyday to be the best I can be. Overall, I have enjoyed my apprenticeship and look forward
to what the future holds for me at Bella.

… Making a difference in the lives of others

WOODEND CFA Fundraising Brunch
On 24 July 2011, the Woodend CFA held a brunch fundraiser, and we donated 90 Bella showbags, each containing a travel size De Lorenzo shampoo and conditioner, for the table settings. With more than 90 people attending, the event was very successful, raising a total of $6,562. This money will be used to buy some much-needed equipment that will make the volunteer firefighters lives easier as well as improving the service they offer to the local community.

Ride For Bikes: Sunday 13 November 2011
Ride for Bikes is an annual fundraising event run by the Cambodian Kids Foundation, with 100 per cent of the proceeds from the entry fee going to buy bikes for the children and pay for their education.

Starting and finishing at Gisborne’s Sankey Reserve, the route took in Hanging Rock and the Memorial Cross at the summit of Mt Macedon. There were three ride options, 60km, 90km and 110km, and Emma chose the 60km course.

‘The ride covers a range of terrain, much of it hilly. The weather was perfect and the scenery magnificent, altogether a really exhilirating experience,’ said Emma. ‘There were 326 riders (at all levels of fitness and experience, and we raised $36,710 for this great cause.’

Bella Annual Cake Stall: Saturday 17 December 2011 and Saturday 24 December 2011
… 8am to 11am, or until sold out

Come along and sample a great range of goodies, including shortbreads, anzacs, cranberry and pistacchio brownies, lemon slice, white chocolate crackles, coconut ice, yoyos and fruit mince tarts. And if the past years are anything to go by, we expect to have some wonderful fresh produce for sale as well. The proceeds will go to supporting some wonderful projects.

… This year, Chris Humfrey of Wild Action Zoo will introduce a special attraction!

Chris will be making a presentation at 9.30am on both days, and you will get to see a koala, a baby hairy nosed wombat, some amazing pythons… and maybe a surprise! Chris will also be selling his boxed DVD sets from his smash hit television series, Chris Humfrey's Wildlife, and will donate $5.00 from the sale of each set to our nominated charities. Chris will also personally sign each DVD set: a great Christmas stocking stuffer!

But it keeps getting better! On 17 and 24 December, Wild Action Zoo will accept enrolments from Bella’s clients for Wild Action Zoo’s 2012 Junior Zookeeper Program, during which the children spend the whole day with Chris. The cost, usually $300.00 per child, will be reduced to $250.00, and you must quote ‘Bella’ to receive the discount. Please note that normal enrolments (no discount) will be accepted until the end of the year, but there are limited spaces available.

The Bella Team members would like to thank Chris for generously supporting us in our fundraising efforts, and we hope you enjoy this exciting addition to our annual cake stall.

…And this is where the money we raise will go

For the past six years, the Bella Team has supported the Volunteer Service in Nepal (VSN) on the project ‘Building our dream’, a home for 30 Shining Star orphans in Nepal. Visit the VSN website to read all about their activities and achievements: www.vsnprojects.org

Last year, we also provided support for a local venture, the Very Special Kids Glen Osmond Farm Project. Very Special Kids (VSK) is a unique organisation that supports families who are caring for children with life-threatening illnesses, and has been given 26 hectares of the farming property ‘Glen Osmond’ on Old Lancefield Road, Woodend to develop a host farm. Up to four cabins and a barn will provide accommodation in a peaceful, rural environment for families who need a short break from the day-to-day routine of caring for their sick child.

To find out how you can help, visit the VSK website at www.vsk.org.au or email their CEO, David Agnew, on mail@vsk.org.au.

This year, half of the money we raise will go to facilitate another international project, this time with the Volunteer Students Abroad (VESA) program in South Africa.

Our very own Ashleigh Carter has been accepted into the VESA program and will be travelling to South Africa in February 2012 to take part in an important community development project. The volunteers will work with villagers and village chiefs in addressing major issues such as a lack of fresh water, dilapidated schools and generally poor infrastructure.

Ashleigh’s work will include teaching children from an orphanage English and basic sanitation, hygiene and nutrition through games and activities. She and her fellow volunteers will also:
* Renovate and revitalise the sometimes run-down facilities with fresh coats of paint, new play equipment and the construction of bathrooms or kitchens;
* Help to build and install sustainable farming units which allow for families and, in particular, single mothers to start a micro business and through this gain employment and income for their family; and
* Work with the national parks authority in areas of conservation within the wetlands area.

For more information on the VESA program please visit: www.vesabroad.com

…Our commitment to sustainablility and the environment

Our most recent initiatives include:
* Switching ALL power points off at at end of each business day;
* Switching off the large refreshment fridge in the salon over the weekend;
* Washing used Eco dry towels and getting a second use out of them prior to putting them in the recylcle bin; and
* Recycling all used stock: we had to purchase an additional recycling bin to accommodate the extras!

For more details, visit the Going Green page on our website at: www.bellasalon.com.au

We will be closed 27, 28 and 29 December. At any other time, feel free to give us a call on 5427 3030, or visit our website and book online: www.bellasalon.com.au
