-> Exciting Policy Alert: County Adopts Local Preferential Purchasing Policy

HumIBA Has Been Working with the County for Several Months to Make It Happen<-



Last week the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 (Supervisor Duffy was absent) to pass a Local Preferential Purchasing Policy that offers a 5% credit for locally-operated businesses for formal bids for supplies, equipment and materials that are not part of a public works project.



Last year HumIBA brought a proposal to Supervisor Bonnie Neely and requested her help in adopting a policy for the County that would give a preference to our local businesses for purchases. We worked with County staff for the past several months - doing research of other similar policies and offering information about the economic benefits of doing business locally.



While we are pleased that the County now has a mechanism to prioritize locally operated businesses, we would like to see the policy go further. The policies we put forth made a distinction between businesses that are locally-owned over businesses that are simply located in Humboldt County. The Multiplier Effect only really works when businesses are locally-owned and the profit from a business stays in our community. We want to see a Policy that takes into account this economic reality.



We have been assured by a majority of the Supervisors as well as County Staff that they understand that this is our priority and that they see this newly adopted policy as as starting point, not the final version. We will continue to work with the Board and Staff to develop a policy that offers the most benefit to our members and all independent businesses.





In the meantime, you can check out the current policy as adopted last week. And you can email our Board of Supervisors members and thank them for passing the policy and let them know you want them to keep working with HumIBA to develop something even stronger.



We want to thank Supervisors Bonnie Neely, Clif Clendenen and Mark Lovelace for being responsive to HumIBA and we look forward to working with them to strengthen the Local Purchasing Policy even further.

Wednesday, October 6 from 8:30am to 5:00pm <-



Hosted by the North Coast Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the 2010 Online Technology Boot Camp will concentrate on all aspects of “moving your business online”, with in-depth training on cloud computing services, free online technology tools, email marketing, website and search engine optimization, and using the latest social networking tools as part of an integrated marketing strategy.

Participants will experience hands-on exercises and real-time demonstrations. The event will be held at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center in Eureka. Registration is $45 and includes lunch.

Thursday, October 14 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm <-



The mixer is open to everyone and will feature food provided by local member businesses, a brief presentation about the HumIBA, and an opportunity to get to know your neighbors and fellow business owners.



We will unveil our Shop Local First for the Holidays Campaign and provide information for how you can participate! Lost Coast Communications and Eureka Television Group will also provide information to help businesses take advantage of the HumIBA radio and television Collaborative Advertising Programs.

This is a great opportunity to show your business off to a new crowd of community members. We are also very open to co-hosting if there is another business you want to partner with or if your business is too small or accommodate a mixer event but you still want to help play the role of host.

Guidelines for Hosting a HumIBA Mixer

Must be a current member of HumIBA.
Must be able to accommodate 50-100 guests. Small businesses that do not have adequate facilities may use an appropriate alternate site for their mixer. Co-hosting is permitted and provides a way for smaller businesses to participate as a mixer co-host.
Host provides food and beverages. Alcoholic beverages are permitted provided that non-alcoholic drinks are also available to guests. Most hosts use a catering service, although this is not required. If a catering service is to be used it must also be a current HumIBA Member (a list of HumIBA caterers and restaurants is available).
Provide a table or counter space near the entrance of the Mixer for a HumIBA table.
A sound system is necessary and can be provided by HumIBA.
We strongly suggest providing a minimum of 5-6 prizes for the business card drawing (can be solicited from other HumIBA Members).
HumIBA will send invitations to all HumIBA Members by email and mail and will promote the mixer to the media through press releases and calendar postings. We will also promote the event through our website, and Twitter and Facebook Pages. Additional promotion by host is encouraged.
