Paramount Ranch Roundup

The SoCal League has its first pledge ride on Saturday February 19th at the historic Paramount Ranch which is part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Agoura Hills.

We will have a website for the event which will help answer all of your questions, allow you to register, and help create a customized pledge page where you can seek donations for your ride! We will send out an announcement that registration is open and directing you to the website within the next week.

To register we are asking adults to commit to raising a minimum of $125 and youth to raising a minimum of $75. There is no additional registration fee on top of that commitment! You will receive snacks while riding, an event t-shirt, a BBQ supper after the ride, and live music during much of the ride and at the BBQ.

The ride is suitable for team riders, parents, coaches, friends, family, and anyone who supports the sustainability of high school cycling in SoCal. The best part is that you can raise money for your club without putting on your own fundraiser. Be sure to tell your supporters to enter the name of your club when registering. All funds raised over the first $25 will be split 50/50 between the League and your club! Ambitious clubs can really help take care of a lot of expenses.

The ride takes place on a 2.5 mile dirt loop of single and double track. Each loop brings riders back through the main street of an old west town movie set. The goal is not to complete the most laps. The goal is to ride for 3 hours straight (noon to 3:00 pm) while building fitness and connecting with great folks who support the League.

This just in! KTLA news just did a profile on Paramount Ranch. Click HERE to watch it.

Pump Track Raising

The SoCal League is having a "Pump Track Raising." In the grand tradition of a barn raising, the League, thanks to very generous donations of space and equipment by coaches from Woodcrest Christian High School Cycling, is building a pump track in Riverside under the guidance of mountain biking skills guru Lee McCormack.

According to Lee, "The NICA skills curriculum is all about mastery of the fundamental skills: position, range of motion, timing, power and ultimately matching the rider's energy to the shape of the trail. There is no better place to hone those skills than a pump track."

The build will be happening beginning early in the morning on Saturday January 22nd and we'll be hosting an open Jam Session and BBQ for League riders and coaches all day on Sunday January 23rd. Coaches have received a separate email with full information to pass along to their clubs. Make sure you tell our coach you want to attend! If you are an independent rider, contact Matt Gunnell for information. Mountain Bike Action magazine will be on scene covering the festivities!

Rider Camps

The League is putting on two one-day rider camps this season. Rider camps are a great way to learn or review skills the League way, make new friends from other clubs, and generally have a great time. Registration is open now with full information on the website. Camps cost $45 and include a skills clinic, lunch, and a group ride appropriate for skill and fitness level. Be sure to have your forms postmarked by January 26th to avoid a late fee.

These camps are especially great for riders new to the League. They are also appropriate for 7th and 8th grade riders who are planning on riding with the League as freshmen.

Dates are Saturday February 5th at Bonelli Park in San Dimas and Sunday February 6th at Cheseboro Canyon in Agoura Hills.

Wilderness First Aid for Mountain Bikers

Wilderness First Aid for Mountain Bikers is a cornerstone class offered once a year. It is a requirement for full licensing for head and assistant coaches. It is recommended for any ride leader responsible league rider.

This year we are lucky to be hosted by the Crescenta Valley Composite club at Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta. The 16 hour class takes place Saturday and Sunday January 15-16, 2011. We also offer a CPR class Saturday evening January 15.

Full information is available on the website. Registration paperwork must be postmarked by December 31st in order to receive early registration pricing.
