Paramount Ranch Roundup

The SoCal League has its first pledge ride on Saturday February 19th at the historic Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills. Registration is ongoing at Once you are registered you will receive a personalized pledge page where supporters can give you PayPal donations. To register we are asking adults to commit to raising a minimum of $125 and youth to raising a minimum of $75. There is no additional registration fee on top of that commitment! You will receive snacks while riding, an event t-shirt, a BBQ supper after the ride, and live music during much of the ride and at the BBQ.

The ride is suitable for team riders, parents, coaches, friends, family, and anyone who supports the sustainability of high school cycling in SoCal. The best part is that you can raise money for your club without putting on your own fundraiser. Be sure to tell your supporters to enter the name of your club when registering. All funds raised over the first $25 will be split 50/50 between the League and your club! Ambitious clubs can really help take care of a lot of expenses and a few have already raised a significant amount of money.

The ride takes place on a 2.5 mile dirt loop of single and double track. Each loop brings riders back through the main street of an old west town movie set. The goal is not to complete the most laps. The goal is to ride for 3 hours straight (noon to 3:00 pm) while building fitness and connecting with great folks who support the League.

Rider Camp

15 riders were greeted by perfect weather, enthusiastic coaches, Clif Bar snacks, and new friendships at the Rider Camp sponsored by Shimano on February 5th at Bonelli Park. If you are a rider (or know one) be sure to keep an eye out for various camps and clinics the League puts on. They are always great for enhancing skills and meeting other student-athletes from throughout the SoCal League area.

Season Volunteers

The SoCal League is in need of a few dedicated volunteers to fill key positions at our races this season. Though most of our positions are filled on a race by race basis by parents of League racers, we have need for several positions better filled by folks willing to really take on a volunteer job at each race. Specific positions we hope to fill are:

Assistant Chief Scorer: Works in the scoring tent making sure all riders are timed and placed accurately so that awards can be given.
Venue Manager: Leads the setup of the venue area Saturday morning. Poles, zip ties, snow fencing, tents, tools, and banners. Touches things up Sunday morning then makes sure it's all accounted for at the end of race day.
Course Manager: leads the marking and repair of the course Saturday morning. Touches things up Sunday morning. Coordinates collection of markings at end of race Sunday.
Volunteer Coordinator: Ensures volunteers know where to go, what to do, and when to be there on Sunday morning.
Feed Zone Manager: Ensures the Feed Zone is stocked with neutral food and drink then makes sure things stay orderly during the races.
Parking Manager: As the League grows it gets more and more important that vehicles get parked in an orderly fashion Sunday morning.
Announcer: Do you have a passion for keeping people entertained and updated? We need you during the races.
Venue Photographer: We want someone to take photos of the venue area. Starts, finishes, and the great "behind the scenes" things that happen in the Specialized Pit Zone area amongst the team tents.
Race Photographer: Be out on the course taking action shots and making the riders look like the stars they are.
Videographer: Take video of the happenings around the venue and on course then edit into various length clips we can use to show the world what goes on in the SoCal League.

If you have a passion for safety we will also gladly accept folks who want to commit to working as a course marshal or race sweep every race. Ideal people have a calm demeanor and at least basic first aid and CPR. Ideal sweepers are ride leaders or coaches who are not critical to their clubs on race day but are used to riding with and working with high school student-athletes.

Camping at Vail Lake

The Vail Lake Challenge (aka SoCal Racing Series race #1) takes place at Vail Lake Resort in Temecula on Sunday March 6th. The complete flyer will be coming soon but if you want to get a jump on camping reservations contact the resort at 951-303-0173 and let them know you're with the SoCal High School Cycling League.

Additionally, the Temecula Valley Wine and Music Festival will be taking place at Vail Lake the weekend of our series final (April 30-May 1). Though the event will be held in a different location, there will likely be an abundance of people camping so getting reservations for the series final now would not be a bad idea.

State Championships Lodging

The SoCal League will be hosting its first State Championships race this Sunday May 15th. Though racers from the NorCal and SoCal Leagues won't begin qualifying until the first race of each series, State Championships will be the biggest high school race ever in SoCal and non-camping lodging will fill up fast! To review the State Championships qualifying rules download the NICA rulebook from the Races page of the website and turn to rule 8.4b.

If you believe you will qualify and expect to attend here are some notes on lodging at or near the venue in Los Olivos:

A large amount of self-contained space for RV and tent camping will be available at the venue Friday and Saturday evenings (see the course and venue map for a basic layout). This should be a great time and is highly recommended! Self-contained means you must bring in your own food, water, and camp stove and pack out your own trash. We will have extra porta-potties and porta-sinks. Camping will be first come, first served with a nominal per-night, per-vehicle fee collected upon entry. This will be the ideal venue to take advantage of our new relationship with El Monte RV (more on that later)! We will be asking Team Directors for a basic number of attendees as we get closer to the race.
For those not wishing to camp we have secured two group rate hotel blocks for Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 in Buelton (easy access as they are both right off highway 101). The Days Inn is $109.99 per night and Pea Soup Andersons is $113 per night. To receive these rates, say you're with, "CA State HS Mountain Bike Championships." The cutoff for reserving a rooms at these block prices is April 13th. Additional lodging may be found in Solvang and Santa Ynez.
