State Championships Final Preview

The 2011 California High School Mountain Biking State Championships is upon us! This Sunday (May 15th) close to 450 riders from the NorCal and SoCal Leagues along with their parents, coaches, and supporters will descend upon the Stump Grinder Dirt Club outside of Los Olivos for one of the biggest cycling events in California. If you haven't yet, please go to the SoCal RACES page, download the event flyer, and review the venue map.

For many riders, this will be their first State Championships event and for most SoCal riders this will be the biggest high school race they have attended. There will be twice as many riders as the biggest race in SoCal this year!

Following are a few important updates and reminders to help you have the best experience possible this weekend. Please read through them!

Camping is available on site (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights) but is primitive meaning there is no water on site. When you think you have enough water, bring a few extra gallons. There will be portable toilets on site. Camping costs $20 per night for RV/Trailers and $10 per night for cars/tents. There will be a camping attendant to pay who will give you a pass for display on your vehicle. If you are the first vehicle in your team, please have a general idea how many vehicles and campers you will have so we can try to group you together. No open fires! Portable stoves and BBQs are ok but have a fire extinguisher and/or water bucket available. All camping will be on the LEFT side of the road as you enter the venue (as shown on the map).
All riders will receive NEW number plates. Registration will be open Saturday from 3-5 PM in addition to Sunday morning at 8 AM.
Independent riders may be in different fields (D2 instead of D1) than they raced in during the SoCal Series. Please confirm your field with registration.
ALL riders need to complete a USA Cycling release (available at registration). This race is co-sanctioned with USA Cycling as top 15 riders in every field also qualify for USA Cycling National Championships.
Pre-registered riders riding for qualified teams have all of their number plates grouped in envelopes at registration. One coach from each qualified team may pick up the packet, pick up USA Cycling releases, and then return the releases as a group to registration by Sunday morning.
SoCal Frosh/Soph Girls. If you are a freshman girl who raced Frosh/Soph you will race in the FRESHMAN field. If you are a sophomore girl who raced in Frosh/Soph you will race in the SOPHOMORE field.
We reserve the right to have a neutral start. In a neutral start, riders will stage as normal. However, instead of racing from a standstill, riders will slowly roll out together following a bike mounted marshal. At an appointed location, the marshal will pull over and signal the race start. During the neutral start, riders must stay in their original placings with no passing. Riders will be notified at staging if a neutral start will occur.
Thank you to all the folks who have stepped up to work at the race! If you have not tossed your name into the ring to help out yet please expect to help at either the venue build Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 am, the venue takedown immediately following the conclusion of the race ahead of podiums, or as a course marshal (marshal meeting Sunday morning at 8:30 am). Let's put on a great show as hosts SoCal!
State Championships Patches. We have 98 letter jacket style patches available. Looks like they'll sell out. We will have a re-order sheet at merchandise. PLEASE have ONE representative from your club collect up money ($10.50 a patch), deliver the money, and sign the sheet. Re-orders will be made next week and we will mail the patches to your team representative. Independent riders may order as individuals.
Look for ALL of your SoCal Series photos on iPads at the Kennedy Photoworks booth.

NICA Invitational Camp

In years past, top NorCal riders have been invited to attend advanced camps. The last time an advanced camp was held was in 2009 and the NorCal riders were joined by a few riders from the first year SoCal League. The riders were challenged daily with various time trials, cross county racing, endurance rides, and race mechanical simulations. An overall placement similar to a stage race format was implemented to rank the riders. This scoring was designed to assess ability and experience which would then help determine selection to either the endurance camp at the Olympic Training Center or the NorCal Travel Team. To supplement the time spent on the bike the campers attended lectures and demonstrations on various race and health related topics put on by guest speakers, and had guest visits from pro riders. The riders demonstrated strong commitment to biking, and gained valuable insight in the challenges of elite level racing.

“At the bike camp, I learned a lot about all the aspects of biking – like nutrition, training, and the psychology of getting ready to race. It was a fun way to meet other people who share the same interest in mountain biking.” – Will Curtis, NorCal League Alumni

“The NorCal summer camps are a blast! Friends, fun, bikes, and food – there isn’t much else to ask for. It’s the best week of the year – the excitement and fun of race day all week long.” – Nate Byrom, NorCal League Alumni

This year NICA is putting on a very similar invitational camp. The camp will be structured similarly to previous advanced camps where riders will face a challenging week of skills clinics, time trials, epic rides, special guests, and group activities. At this camp, however, riders may earn the opportunity to be “Pros for a Day”. In addition, camp staff will be practicing the NICA’s approach to coaching the whole athlete and working with their families.

Highlights of the NICA Invitational Camp:

Expert skills instruction
Race-specific coaching
Competitive events
Special guest riders and speakers
Epic mountain trails
Special opportunities for top riders
