From the Bebek Lady of Ubud. This lady and her family have developed a method for turning bamboo roots into cute ducks. They export quite a lot to Australia already but were very keen to supply the British as they see the Duck as very Indonesian, and wanted us to appreciate Indonesian culture. She was quite surprised when I told her that we have plenty of Ducks in the UK. In Yorkshire everyone is a duck! Bebek is the Indonesian word for Duck, and you see it everywhere, Bebek restaurants especially. Make's sense really, bebek is the noise an Indonesian duck makes, it's true. If a British duck makes a quack .. we should call them quackers. Then everyone in Yorkshire would be quackers :)
I once stayed in the Bebek Tepi Sawah in Ubud, it is a duck themed hotel, restaurant and art gallery, almost overrun with ducks, duck statues and duck art. It was wonderful if a little strange.
There is also a chain of restaurants call the Dirty Duck, that's quite famous. If you ever spend any time here, Bebek is one of those words you quickly learn.
So can you sell these Bamboo Root Ducks? I think they would suit almost any rural gift shop. A perfect gift for your average French tourist visiting a Yorkshire village. "Thanks Duck, here's yer change"
Also on that container is a wealth of wonderful stuff. Check out the new soap dishes, shell caskets, leather bracelets and new additions of teak baskets. All perfect for summer trading.
Until next week.
Take care,
David
